I've had my computer crashing on me at random for a couple weeks now. It's happened a couple times before in smaller engagements and I was able to reboot and log back in quickly. This happened last week when I jumped into a Razor gang and crashed instantly. It turns out that my new 7950GT card is the source of this problem. I've put my old 7900GT back in and things SEEM to be going okay now.
As for what happened earlier tonight, I had Sel logged in inside H-W. There were about 85 hostiles in local. Alynthir logged on as well. We were preparing to cyno out of the system when he says that there was an Arazu and another ship at his safe. No problem, he starts to warp to the MSH gate because our covert pilot (Mynas 4TW!) is sitting 5km away from a Rokh that needs to die. I figure, what the hell, de-cloak and start to warp in as well. Maybe we'll get a fight!
Just as my ship enters warp, my computer locks up AGAIN and I spent 10 mins trying to reboot to a stable desktop. Giving up, I run downstairs, grab my laptop and hop on TS. I'm told that it would probably not be best to log back in at that moment considering there are about 100 people sitting at the spot I vanished from.
The situation wasn't 'hopeless', but there was no way I was going to try to fight something like that on my laptop. So I spent the next hour pulling / switching RAM chips and rebooting over and over to try to get a stable desktop. Finally, I pulled my new graphics card and put in an old one. Magically, everything worked again. So there's $300 I'll be RMA'ing back from newegg.com.
So, I logged back in, got ganged and cyno'd out like we'd planned to do anyway. I was greeted by this when I came out of warp from logging back in:
Lookie! They dropped cans so I can't cloak or warp!
Interestingly enough, from the angle I warped in from, I could have easily turned to warp out. Regardless, had the battle actually taken place it would have been a good one. I'm sure it was a well planned trap, but I didn't even know there was a trap (if that's what it was) until I came on TS ten minutes after I'd crashed.
Now, I love the witch hunt mentality that seems to have infested the forums lately, but we've put our Motherships in more jeopardy in the last two weeks than was faced this evening. We've had 80+ ships shooting at us before, jumped into large bubble camps, had dreads cyno'd in on us and generally had a ******* blast with the whole, "Let's see what these things can do!" mentality.
I seriously doubt anyone who has seen me fly that Nyx up close believes for one second that I'd log it off from a fight. If you do, good for you.
Have a cookie!
Try getting a new PSU mate, something simmilar used to happen to me when I added a new GFX card and the old PSU didnt have the power to support it so as soon as there was high demand on anything the comp shutdown.
